Type: Suf rug, Kashan or Tehran
Size: 208 cm x 130 cm
Knots: 10 x 10cm2, approx. total 2,704,000
Description: Late 19th/early 20th century. The technique of this rug is called suf and has large open areas created without a pile. Thus the fine ivory ground has a
delicate design of red details with a blue strap edge to the main medallion; the silver corners have a red, slightly geometric, detailed design. Red highlights in the border are also on an ivory unpiled
ground; the red guardbands have details in ivory with running tendrils motifs.
In a sense the rug may be seeking to recreate the luxury of some of the Safavid polonais rugs which employed silver and gold thread for at first glance the suf technique suggests the shimmer of silver. See no. 8.
