Type: North West Persian Silk Hunting Rug.
Size: 218 cm x 155 cm
Knots: 8 x 6cm2, approx. total 1,622,000
Description: Probably dating from the 19th century, this rug echoes the style of the great hunting rugs and carpets of the Safavid period, examples of which grace many of the great
museum collections of the world. The upper corners of the rug have ivory grounds with a musician playing the kamancha (rather like a violin) to the left and an angel to the right (which is a feature familiar
in manuscript illumination from the 15th century onwards and which latterly was much favoured in rug design).
Over the indigo field, which might suggest a night scene, bowmen on horseback, and some with lances, pursue animals amidst dense sprays of flowers, which are mainly detailed in ivory. A red border has seated and standing figures among floral motifs. The whole design is very carefully drawn.
