Description: The revival of the art form in the late 19th century saw numerous works created in the style of the Safavid polonais rugs of the 17th century, which are so called because the examples familiar to the West came from Poland where they had probably originated as part of diplomatic gifts sent from Persia at the time.  This marvellouse example has pale green ivory corner pieces featuring beautiful palmettes which look in upon a complex and handsome central medallion; the wealth of flowers in ivory have details picked out in madder with some delicate touches in indigo.  The stylised border of alternating rosettes is exclosed within complex threefold guardbands full of tiny floral motifs.
