Description: Late 19th century.
This exquisite rug is attributed to Hajji Jalili, a rather obscure, even mysterious figure, who is associated with design type and quality of a very superior sort of work. The strong madder ground supports an open medallion, with long elegant leaves, palmettes and rosettes and blue and ivory details. There is a blue ground to the border, whose floral sprays and shoots break into the main field and guardbands; the inner guardband is in plain ivory, whilst the outer is pale blue with floral devices. The whole work is a refreshing and tranquil interpretation of the familiar repertoire.
