Description: Dating from the late 19th/early 20th century, this is a lovely example of great delicacy.
Formally in the form of a prayer rug, but doubtless used as a wall hanging, it has blue spandrels before a main ground in ivory. Filling the field are blue and pink flowers and sprays of other blossoms. At the base of the field is a vase with two birds to either side. In the stylised branches arising from the base are other pairs of birds asymmetrically placed. The border, in particular suggests Kashan with it delicate rose hue adorned with birds and running animals. The main border is flanked by double matching guardbands to either side. As with every traditional rug, the verdant image is a suggestion of both an earthly and spiritual paradise.
