Type: Silk Tabriz Prayer Rug
Size: 159 cm x 120 cm
Knots: 9 x 9 cm2, approx. total 1,545,000
Description: Late 19th century.
This rug has somewhat different proportions to the previous similar examples. The quality of the knotting is of a high order. The ivory ground has details in madder, and indigo. The prayer rug format would also have been suitable for a wall hanging and it it difficult - and perhaps pointless - to suggest any primary purpose. The spandrels of the arch are decorated with delicate floral motifs; the lamp hangs from the apex. The columns are free standing, with rows of trees at the bottom, perhaps inspired by woodwork or stucco, whence the friezes above and below the main field. The three part guard bands flank the main border with its profusion of rosettes and blossoms.
