Type: North West Persian Silk and Wool Prayer Rug.
Size: 170 cm x 122 cm
Knots: 7 x 5 cm2, approx. total 726,000
Description: This rug forms part of a group dating from the late 19th century and which has strong stylistic links to the Ottoman domains to the west of the region. The
ground is of a rust colour, supporting the prayer niche which echoes classical early examples.
The usual furniture of the format is present: the lamp indicating spiritual light, supporting columns perhaps with motifs suggesting marquetry. Three vases are placed at the bottom with a frieze above the niche. The complex borders are dominated by stylised palmettes. The design is a complex one with an obvious debt to architectonic precedents.
