Description: This beautiful and finely knotted masterwork dates from the end of the 19th century. It was probably created in Tabriz and has strong echoes of Safavid precedents dating from the 17th century, which have been associated with the town. The rug has a madder brown ground with rosettes and palmettes (often known as the Shah 'Abbasi design, after the great Safavid monarch of that name). It also has the serpentine cloudbands which have a long history in Persian art. It has a simple border with palmettes and blossoms. The rug is a magnificent example of the quality of work which is a testimony to the continuation of the decorative and stylistic legacy of the north west of the county.
